What is a GSL, SL, CSL, BSL etc?

Although we work hard to try and make Scouting as transparent as possible, there are certain terms that are used by those involved that can sometime be confusing. Here is an explanation of a few of them:

GSL – Group Scout Leader, the “manager” of the 4th Morpeth Scout Group

SL – Scout Leader, the leader in charge of your child’s Scout Troop

CSL – Cub Scout Leader, the leader in charge of your child’s Cub Pack

BSL – Beaver Scout Leader, the leader in charge of your child’s Beaver Colony

ASL – Assistant Scout Leader, the leaders helping the SL run the Troop

ACSL – Assistant Cub Scout Leader, the leaders helping the CSL run the Pack

ABSL – Assistant Beaver Scout Leader, the leaders helping the BSL run the Colony

OH – Occasional Helper, people who have been CRB checked to help on an occasional basis

ASU – Active Support Unit, a group of individuals who cannot commit every week but provide vital support to the running of the Group

YL – Young Leaders, Explorer Scouts who volunteer to help the Group in a leadership role

PL – Patrol Leader, a Scout asked to lead a small sub-group of Scouts called a Patrol

APL – Assistant Patrol Leader – the assistant to the PL

Sixer – a Cub Scout asked to lead the small sub-group of Cubs called a “Six”

Seconder – a Cub Scout asked to assist the Sixer

Exec – The Executive Committee, the charitable trustees of the Group, this includes Leaders, parents and other lay members voted onto the Committee at the AGM

AGM – Annual General Meeting of the Scout Council of 4th Morpeth Scout Group

Scout Council – All Leaders, Parents, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Young Leaders, helpers and supporters

DC – District Commissioner, the line manager of the GSL responsible for all Scouting in the District.

District – Castle Morpeth Scout District, an administrative area encompassing all Scouting in the former Castle Morpeth borough – this includes 4th Morpeth, 6th Morpeth, Stannington Ridley and 1st Ponteland Scout Groups, Morpeth Explorers and Ponteland Explorers
